Learn Finnish for Beginners Online Course (independent online study) 

• 2.3.–26.4.2026 

• Approximately 3-4 hours per week at times that suit you. 

• Voluntary weekly meetings with a Finnish language teacher from 15:00 to 16:00 on Mondays. 

Starting level: 0. Target level: A1.2 

This eight-week online course is designed for beginners. 

During the course, you will learn the fundamentals of the Finnish language by watching videos and independently completing written and oral assignments at your own pace online.  

The course also offers the opportunity to participate in weekly one-hour meetings with a Finnish language teacher. During these meetings, you can ask questions about the course material and practise your Finnish speaking skills. 

The course covers the following themes: 

• The Finnish alphabet and sounds 

• Introducing yourself, languages, nationalities and countries 

• Asking and answering basic questions 

• Numbers, clock times, days of the week, months and seasons  

• Describing the weather and your family 

• Verbs for everyday life 

• Ordering and interacting in a café 

• Basic grammar, including singular partitive and genitive forms, “I have” and the basics of verb conjugation. 

Course workload: Set aside at least three hours each week for studying.  
You will achieve the best learning results if you can spread your study time over several days a week and study for 45 minutes at a time, for example.  

Course participants can attend weekly meetings with a Finnish language teacher on Teams, which take place from 15:00 to 16:00 on Mondays.
